Built for the Mortise
Cutting a mortise puts demands on a chisel that ordinary paring and fitting work do not. Repeated mallet strikes drive the cutting edge deep into the wood, while levering out waste places significant lateral stress on the blade.
IBC Mortise Chisels are built specifically for this work. A thick, rigid blade and reinforced construction provide the strength needed for repeated chopping while resisting the twisting and deflection that can compromise an accurate mortise.
Compared with a general-purpose bench chisel, the heavier mortise chisel is the better choice when chopping mortises is a regular part of your work.
A2 Steel - Built to Take the Strike
Each IBC Mortise Chisel blade is machined from AISI high-vanadium A2 tool steel, fully stress relieved, triple tempered, cryogenically treated, and hardened to 60–62 Rc for dependable edge retention.
The cutting edge is ground with a 30° primary bevel and a 2° higher micro-bevel, providing robust edge geometry for demanding chopping work.
A solid, hardened steel ferrule reinforces the connection between blade and handle, protecting the tang and helping the chisel withstand the impact and lateral stresses created by repeated mallet strikes.

IBC Mortise Chisels are available in six widths:

Choose individual widths to match the mortises you cut most often, or the complete six-chisel set for a full range of furniture and joinery work.
For general paring, fitting, and lighter chopping, choose IBC Bench Chisels. When the work calls for repeated heavy chopping and deep mortises, reach for a dedicated Mortise Chisel.
