IBC Skew Chisels were independently reviewed by Fine Woodworking, where reviewer Bill Pavlak praised their balance, edge retention, and clean cutting performance. The skewed blades produced a “glassy surface on end grain” and performed particularly well when working into the tight corners of half-blind dovetails. (Issue #272, Tools & Shops 2019.)
Why Left- and Right-Skewed Chisels?
The angled cutting edge is what gives a skew chisel access to corners and surfaces that can be difficult to approach with a conventional square-edged blade. A matched left- and right-skewed pair lets you approach the work from either direction while keeping the cutting edge positioned for a controlled paring cut.
This makes skew chisels especially useful for cleaning dovetail sockets, reaching into tight corners, making controlled undercuts, working end grain, and refining fine joinery where access is limited.
For chopping mortises or other work requiring repeated mallet strikes, choose an IBC Bench or Mortise Chisel instead.
A2 Steel - Made for Fine Cutting
At the heart of every IBC Skew Chisel is its cutting edge.
Each blade is machined from AISI high-vanadium A2 tool steel, hardened to 60–62 Rc, cryogenically treated and triple tempered for edge retention and dependable performance.
From raw steel to finished blade, IBC chisel blades are manufactured in our Toronto facility.
IBC Skew Chisels are available in 3/8", 1/2", and 5/8" matched pairs, or as a complete six-chisel set.
