Hand Planes Are All About The Blade

Plane Makers and Woodworking experts claim that the blade/iron is the most important part of a hand plane in terms of performance. These Blade and Chip Breaker Matched Sets are exquisitely crafted for older planes. Turn an older, fettled bench plane to one that performs at a level that you would only expect to get from a new premium quality modern hand plane, at a fraction of the price.

David Charlesworth wrote:

“The IBC matched blade/breaker is the best prepared that I have seen. The chip breaker is outstanding and a few strokes on each surface will perfect it. Blade flatness and finish are excellent, so the total preparation time is minimal. With proper tuning and sole flattening results should be comparable to premium modern planes. The benefit of this set is the reduced preparation time and the ability to fit a blade and chip breaker set to a Stanley that is much thicker than the original. I have been tuning up old Stanley planes for over 30 years. We have even salvaged pre 1910 planes. Tremendous satisfaction can be had from reviving and using an old heirloom.”

IBC blades are high vanadium A-2 steel, 0.095” thick, 60-62HRc, triple tempered and cryogenically treated to optimize the cutting edge’s wear resistance properties. Our breakers are high carbon steel, 0.125” thick. Bevels are mated to achieve a flatness tolerance of +/-0.001” along the entire width of the cutting edge. Sides are precision ground to be parallel and square to the bevels.

IBC Chisels Are Premier Tools

The tool's design, materials, and machining are first rate. These chisels feel like they belong in your hand and, after a proper sharpening, perform exactly as you would expect at this price point. Are they expensive? Yes, but they're heirloom tools.

Excellent tool

I started a cabinet project using hickory and have not had to sharpen my chisel over the entire project. It was still cutting butt hinge mortices right up to the end and still grabs a fingernail. Thoroughly pleased.

Best chisel I have ever held

You can tell great care and thought went into its design and craftsmanship. The balance is great, it disassembles and comes back together like clockwork. The blade is superb, with clean, crisp edges.

Amazing

Putting a secondary and tertiary bevel was a breeze, and the way it cuts is beyond comparison. End grain on sapele, walnut, and maple come off the plane in beautiful solid ribbons.

As promised!

Easy to sharpen, well made and a high degree of pride of ownership. It is a tool you stand back and say I don't know how you can improve on this. Buy it once and never regret it.

Highly recommended

This quality one fits like a glove. I see $150 for a chisel as nearly free, lucky to have these for so little investment.
